Phone Activation Explained: How to Activate Without Calling
Some products in our catalogue are marked Phone Activation. They cost noticeably less than the standard version and work exactly the same once installed — the difference is entirely in how you activate them the first time.
In short
- Enter the key the usual way. When online activation refuses it, choose Activate by phone — that is expected, not a fault.
- Pick any country, then copy the Installation ID shown on screen.
- Paste it into the Microsoft Activation Portal (no call needed), type the Confirmation ID back into the same window — and keep that window open the whole time.
You do not need to make a phone call
The name is left over from how this used to work. Microsoft has moved the process to an online portal: you copy an Installation ID from the activation window, paste it into the portal, and it gives you back a Confirmation ID to type in. No telephone, no automated menu, no writing digits down while someone reads them aloud.
It takes about two minutes, once. That is the whole trade-off for the lower price.
Do not keep retrying normal online activation with a phone activation key — it will fail every time by design. Go straight to the steps below.
Windows
- Open Start → Settings → System → Activation → Change product key and enter your key.
- When it does not activate online, a Activate by phone or Automated help option appears — click it.
- Pick any country from the list. It no longer matters which one — it only used to decide which number you called.
- Copy the Installation ID shown on screen and paste it into Microsoft's activation portal.
- The portal returns a Confirmation ID. Type it into the same window and finish.
Office
- Open any Office application — Word or Excel is easiest.
- Enter the product key you received from us.
- Choose the option to activate by telephone when it is offered.
- Pick any country, then copy the Installation ID into Microsoft's activation portal and enter the Confirmation ID it gives you.
If the activation window does not appear on its own, close every Office application and reopen Word. Office only re-runs the activation check on a fresh start.

Two things that trip people up
- Keep the activation window open the whole time. Closing it generates a new Installation ID, and the Confirmation ID you were given no longer matches. This is the single most common reason the process fails.
- Activate on the machine you intend to keep it on. Phone activation ties the licence to that hardware.
If the portal will not accept your Installation ID
Check that you copied all of it — it is nine blocks of digits, and a missing block looks like a full ID at a glance. Then confirm the key actually installed: run slmgr /dli in a command prompt, which shows the last five characters of the installed key.
