Phone Activation Explained: What It Is and How to Do It
Some products in our catalogue are marked Phone Activation. They cost noticeably less than the standard version and work exactly the same once installed — the difference is entirely in how you activate them the first time.
What phone activation means
Instead of your PC contacting Microsoft's activation servers over the internet, you activate through Microsoft's automated telephone service. You read an installation ID to the system, it gives you back a confirmation ID, and you type that in. The licence is then permanent on that machine, and you never repeat the process.
It takes roughly ten minutes, once. That is the whole trade-off for the lower price.
Do not keep retrying online activation with a phone activation key — it will fail every time by design. Go straight to the telephone wizard described below.
Activating Windows by phone
- Install the key first. Open Command Prompt (Admin) and run slmgr /ipk XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX.
- Open the telephone activation wizard: press Windows key + R, type slui 4 and press Enter.
- Select your country or region from the list. This determines which number you are shown.
- The wizard displays a phone number and your Installation ID — nine blocks of six digits.
- Call the number. The automated system asks you to enter the installation ID, block by block, on your keypad.
- The system reads back a Confirmation ID — eight blocks of six digits. Type it into the wizard.
- Click Activate Windows.
Keep the wizard open for the whole call. If you close it, the installation ID changes and the confirmation ID you were given no longer matches.
Activating Office by phone
Install Office and enter your key as usual through File → Account → Change Product Key. When online activation does not complete, Office offers the activation wizard — choose the option to activate by telephone. From there the steps are the same: country, phone number, installation ID, confirmation ID.
If the wizard does not appear on its own, close every Office application and reopen Word. Office only re-runs the activation check on a fresh start.
Practical tips
- Have a pen ready. The confirmation ID is 48 digits read aloud. Writing it down beats trying to remember it.
- Use a phone with a keypad you can reach during the call — speakerphone is easier than juggling a handset.
- The automated line is available around the clock and does not require speaking to a person.
- Activate once, on the machine you intend to keep it on. Phone activation ties the licence to that hardware.
If the system will not give you a confirmation ID
Occasionally the automated line transfers you to an agent or ends the call. Check first that the installation ID was entered completely and that the key was installed successfully in the previous step — running slmgr /dli shows the last five characters of the installed key, which is a quick way to confirm the right one is in place.
If it still will not go through, contact us with your order number and the exact point where the process stopped. Do not keep repeating the call — we will look at it with you.
