Windows Activation Error Codes and What They Mean

When activation fails, Windows shows an error code. It looks cryptic, but each code points to one specific cause — so the code tells you what to fix. Find yours below.

To see the code, open Settings → System → Activation, or run slmgr /ato in an administrator command prompt, which reports it in a dialog box.

0xC004F050 — the product key is invalid

Despite the wording, the key is usually fine and the edition is wrong. A Windows 11 Pro key will not activate a Home installation, and a Windows 10 key will not activate Windows 11.

What to do: check Settings → System → About and compare the edition with what you bought. If they differ, entering the key in Settings → System → Activation → Change product key offers an edition upgrade — accept it. If the edition matches, retype the key by pasting rather than typing.

0x803FA067 — the key does not match this version

The same family of problem, reported by the newer activation client: the licence does not cover the Windows version installed. It also appears when a machine was upgraded from an earlier Windows and is carrying a licence from that installation.

What to do: confirm the installed edition, then enter the key through Change product key.

0xC004C003 — the key is blocked

The activation server refused the key. In practice this means the key has already been activated more times than its licence allows, or Microsoft has blocked it.

What to do: this one is not fixable at your end — contact us with your order number and the code. Do not keep retrying; repeated attempts do not change the server's answer.

0xC004C008 and 0xC004C020 — activation limit reached

The key has hit the number of activations it is permitted. This is normal for a key that has been moved between machines several times.

What to do: if this is a fresh key on its first machine, contact us. If you have moved the licence between PCs, phone activation will often still go through — see our phone activation guide.

0x8007232B and 0xC004F074 — no activation server found

Windows is trying to reach a corporate KMS activation server that does not exist on your network. This happens when the installation was set up for volume activation.

What to do: install your own key explicitly, which switches the machine off KMS activation. In an administrator command prompt run slmgr /ipk XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX, then slmgr /ato.

0x80072EE7 and 0x8007267C — cannot reach the activation servers

A network problem rather than a licence problem. A captive-portal Wi-Fi network, a VPN, a corporate firewall or a DNS misconfiguration will all produce this.

What to do: confirm the PC has working internet, disconnect any VPN, and try again. On a restricted network, try from a different connection — a phone hotspot is a quick test.

0xC004F213 — no product key found

Windows cannot find a licence for this machine. The usual cause is a hardware change — replacing a motherboard invalidates the previous activation.

What to do: re-enter your key through Settings → System → Activation → Change product key.

Before assuming a key is faulty, check the two things that cause most failures: the edition installed on the PC, and a mistyped character. Microsoft keys contain no letter O and no letter I — those are the digits 0 and 1.

A code that is not listed here

Run the built-in troubleshooter first: Settings → System → Activation → Troubleshoot. It resolves activation left over from hardware changes on its own.

If it does not, send us the exact code together with your order number and which Windows edition is installed. Those three details are enough for us to identify the cause without a long exchange.
