How to Activate Microsoft Visio and Project

Visio and Project are separate products — they are not part of an Office suite, and they carry their own product key. Activation itself is quick; the part that goes wrong is installing them alongside an Office that is already on the PC.

In short

Match the Office you already have — same version year, same 32-bit or 64-bit build. Check it in Word → File → Account → About Word.
Install Visio or Project, then open it and go to File → Account → Change Product Key.
Enter the 25-character key, confirm, and restart the application when it asks. If it is refused, you can use the Microsoft Activation Portal instead.

The rule that saves the most time

Visio and Project must match the Office already installed — same version year and same 32-bit or 64-bit build. Mixing them is the most common reason the installer stops halfway or refuses to start, and the message it shows rarely says which of the two is the problem.

To check what you have, open Word and go to File → Account → About Word. The line at the top gives the version and, at the end, whether it is 32-bit or 64-bit. Install the matching Visio or Project. If there is no Office on the machine at all, this does not apply — install whichever you like.

Step 1: download

These are Microsoft's own images:

Visio Professional 2024 — download (about 5.1 GB)
Visio Professional 2021 — download (about 4.7 GB)
Visio Professional 2019 — download (about 4.0 GB)
Project Professional 2024 — download (about 5.1 GB)
Project Professional 2021 — download (about 4.7 GB)
Project Professional 2019 — download (about 4.0 GB)

Each is an .img disc image. On Windows 10 and 11, double-click the file — it mounts as a drive — then run setup.exe inside it.

Step 2: enter your key

Open Visio or Project after the installation finishes.
If an activation wizard appears on first launch, enter your 25-character key there.
If it does not, go to File → Account and click Change Product Key.
Enter the key, confirm, and restart the application when it asks.

That restart matters — the licence state only refreshes when the application starts fresh.

Step 3: confirm it worked

Go back to File → Account. Under Product Information you should see the product name and the words Product Activated.

Common problems

The installer stops or refuses to run. Almost always the version or bitness mismatch described above. Check File → Account → About Word and install the matching build.
"The product key you entered cannot be used to activate this product." A Visio key will not activate Project, and a 2021 key will not activate a 2024 installation. Check what actually installed under File → Account.
It keeps asking you to sign in. That prompt belongs to a Microsoft 365 trial, not to your licence. Remove the trial from Settings → Apps → Installed apps and restart.
